Summary:
The law of 30 October 2018 for balanced commercial relations in the agricultural and food sector and healthy, sustainable food accessible to all, commonly referred to as the "Food Law" or even the "EGalim Law", is a French law resulting from the "États généraux de l'alimentation" (General Assembly on Food) launched in 2017, bringing together civil society - consumers, agri-food industrialists, large-scale retailers and the public authorities. This law aims to re-establish a balance in the commercial relations between producers and retailers and to make healthy and sustainable food accessible to all consumers. It was adopted by Parliament on 2 October 2018 and promulgated on 30 October 2018. The law has three objectives: (1) to pay producers a fair price so that they can make a dignified living from their work; (2) to improve the sanitary, environmental and nutritional quality of products; (3) to promote healthy, safe and sustainable food for all. To this end, the following lines of action have been established (which in turn include a wide range of measures):
-Enable farmers to earn a decent income by sharing the value of their products more equitably.
-To improve the sanitary and environmental conditions of production.
-Improve animal welfare
-Promote healthy, safe and sustainable food for all.
-Reducing the use of plastic in the food industry.
