Summary:
The German Food and Feed Code (Lebensmittel- und Futtermittelgesetzbuch, LFGB) came into force as a federal law in Germany on September 7, 2005. It largely replaced the provisions of the Foodstuffs and Consumer Goods Act (LMBG). German food law was thus restructured in line with the EU's basic regulation, which has been in force since January 1, 2005, and thus became the umbrella law for German food law. The new LFGB covers all stages of production and processing along the food value chain and applies not only to food and consumer goods but also to animal feed and cosmetics. The top priority is food safety. The manufacturer, trader or distributor must ensure the flawless quality of the goods. Product traceability must be ensured at all stages of processing in the agribusiness.
